One of the questions I have received lately (especially from post-partum and stressed out Moms) is “How can I get my hair to grow better?”
Well, healthy, vibrant hair isn’t just a result of good genetics or the latest hair product—it’s a reflection of your overall health and how well you nourish your body, inside and out. While there’s no magic potion for instantly long locks, taking a holistic approach to hair care can significantly improve hair strength, thickness, and shine over time.

From nutrient-packed foods, lifestyle and supplements to clean, organic hair care lines, here’s a guide to holistic practices that promote hair health and growth, naturally!
Start From Within: Nutritional Support for Hair Growth
Your hair thrives on the nutrients your body receives. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet is essential for healthy hair growth. Here are some ways to nourish your hair from the inside:
Dietary Staples for Healthy Hair
- Protein-rich foods: Hair is made primarily of keratin, a protein. Include foods like sweet potatoes onions, sunflower seeds, lentils and quinoa.
- Healthy fats & omega-3s: Found in chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, avocado, hemp and seaweed help maintain hair hydration and scalp health.
- Vitamins & minerals:
- Vitamin C & iron (from spinach and citrus fruits) support blood circulation to hair follicles.
- Vitamin A & beta-carotene (from sweet potatoes and carrots) promote sebum production for scalp moisture.
- Biotin & zinc (found in nuts, seeds, and legumes) aid in keratin production and follicle health.
This basically sums up my diet. Maybe why I don’t have hair issues? I’m not sure… but there are a few other things I do, too.

Supplements That Support Hair from the Inside Out
Supplements can help fill nutritional gaps in your diet and directly support hair growth and hydration. I drink this all the time but not for hair health; I drink it for hydration and great skin! The hair health is just a nice bonus.
Pique B•T Fountain: Beauty Electrolyte

This is my go-to electrolyte drink for those hot summer days where the kids (or I) start to get a little dehydrated. One of these packets saved us from a hospital visit at the beach last year, and my girls came home from school on the 100-degree day yesterday requesting this one specifically. But it’s not just an electrolyte drink – there are plenty of those. I drink it daily for hydration, but also skin & hair benefits. This unique supplement supports hair health through a mix of hydration and targeted nutrients:
- Ceramides: Naturally occurring lipids that strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage.
- Hyaluronic Acid: A hydration powerhouse, it keeps hair moisturized, reducing brittleness.
- Electrolytes & minerals (magnesium, potassium, calcium): Promote deep cellular hydration and overall wellness.
- Clean formula: Organic yuzu berry flavor, no sugar, preservatives, or artificial ingredients—vegan-friendly and 100% clean.

Organifi Glow

Another holistic supplement aimed at hair, skin, and DNA repair:
- Acerola cherry and Rosehips: A potent source of vitamin C, which helps build collagen and protect hair follicles.
- Amla: A traditional Ayurvedic fruit known to support hair strength and shine.
- Bamboo silica: an essential mineral known for forming collagen and improving the integrity of hair strands.
- Aloe vera: Soothing, hydrating and helps scalp health.

I drink this almost daily… as do my kids! They ask for it after school. Just like food, what you drink can have benefits and help heal you, or just contain sugar, dyes and artificial flavorings which do the opposite. So back away from those empty calorie, high fructose, chemical laden toxic beverages!
Topical & Herbal Treatments to Feed Your Scalp
External nourishment can be just as important as internal. Natural oils and treatments support the scalp, stimulate blood flow, and protect hair strands.
Topical Oils & Masks
- Castor, coconut, and olive oils: Rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that deeply nourish the scalp.
- Essential oils: Rosemary, peppermint, and geranium oils have been shown to stimulate the hair follicles and encourage growth.
- Aloe vera: Hydrates the scalp and soothes inflammation.
- Fenugreek: High in protein and nicotinic acid, it can be used in hair masks to prevent hair thinning.
Herbal Rinses
- Green tea rinse: Rich in antioxidants, it may help prevent hair loss and support a healthy scalp.
Although I have not tried the above, I know others who have had success with them. At the very least, you will smell good and have shiny hair! 🙂
There is no down side to giving this a try.
Lifestyle Habits that Encourage Growth
Holistic hair health also includes how you treat your body and hair every day:
- Scalp massage: Regular massage increases blood circulation to hair follicles, promoting growth. A scalp massage feels SO good! (Just use your fingers… I often use my hair pic too!)
- Stress management: Chronic stress can trigger hair loss. Incorporate meditation, yoga, or breathwork into your routine. Stress management is essential to just about anyone living right now (am I right!?)
- Gentle hair care: Avoid tight hairstyles, excessive heat, and chemical treatments that weaken hair over time. I do put my hair up a lot (I have to with 3 little kids!), but I change it up often and don’t make it too tight. And yes to avoiding chemicals! That’s a HUGE one for me!
Go Clean: Organic Hair Care Products
Using non-toxic, organic hair products helps maintain a healthy scalp environment—critical for hair growth. I can’t remember the last time I used a toxic hair care product (over 15 years ago maybe?). Below are my favorites that I use and you can find in my shower. 🙂 If you’d like styling recommendations, I can share that next. Just let me know!
Why Organic Hair Products Matter
- Avoids harsh chemicals: Sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances can irritate the scalp and disrupt natural oil balance.
- Nourishing botanicals: Ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and lavender found in clean hair care products nourish and soothe the scalp.
Top Picks for Holistic Hair Care

- Innersense: Features plant-based ingredients like aloe and lavender to promote scalp health and strengthen hair. I use some of their styling products as well!
- Rahua: Uses Amazonian oils known for their deep hydration and restorative properties, ideal for damaged or dry hair. I have a few of their different lines… depending on my mood or what I want (more volume? more hydration?) They have you covered!
Holistic hair care goes beyond trendy products—it’s about creating the right conditions for your hair to thrive. By combining:
- A nutrient-dense diet
- Targeted supplements
- Natural topical treatments
- A mindful, stress-reducing lifestyle
- And clean, non-toxic hair care products…
…you’ll support long-term hair health and growth in a way that aligns with your body’s natural rhythm.
Healthy hair starts from within—and thrives when you treat it with care, patience, and nourishment. But honestly, all those bullets above will benefit you in SO many more ways than JUST healthy, full hair. I highly recommend incorporating some of these suggestions and just see how you feel. Improved hair growth is just a side benefit! 🙂
This is so helpful! Making some updates to my diet and supplements. Thanks for all this info!
